User Support Group > Software Services

The Computer Center acquires licensed software for campus-wide use based on user needs and demands. The software licenses are renewed each year. Depending on needs and demands, our users use the latest versions of every software licensed.

The software, licensed for use by our University, shall be used in accordance with the 3rd, 5th and 7th articles of the 'METU Information Technology Resources Use Policy'. Consequently, compliance with the license agreements is essential and the 'license keys' of the software, which is used in the set up process, shall not be shared with the third parties. The fifth article is to be applied to the users who do not comply with these rules.

Information about available licensed software can be reached from the following links:

Licensed Software can be obtained from CC Library and METU Licensed Software FTP Access.

Important Note 1: Users who would prefer to download software installation directories from our FTP site for licensed sowftware (ftp://ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr) by simple copy paste commands, should use ftp client software or (for Windows users) copy the following address

ftp://user_name@ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr

to address bar of any open window of the operating system ("user_name" should be substituted by user's actual username) and hit enter, type their passwords to the login window.

Browsers like Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox function as ftp clients, allow single file transfers but cannot download a directory with the files and subdirectories contained in it.

Due to the license agreements, this site is accessible to METU personnel only.

Important Note 2:

The IP number of the Beluga server has been changed within the scope of the efforts that aim to change the current infrastructure to Gigabyte network infrastructure. The users should apply the following settings on the local operating system configuration files to be able to run the licensed software(*) that check their licenses from the Beluga server and that run on Windows/Linux operating systems:

For Windows operating systems:

The "hosts.sam", "hosts" and "lmhosts.sam" files under C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory should be checked. (Remember that depending on the operating system that runs on your system, all these files may not be present on your system or their location may be different. In such cases, you can find the files by using the Search option on the Start menu.) If the file contains the following statement:

144.122.156.105 beluga.cc.metu.edu.tr or
144.122.156.105 beluga

this statement should be changed to the following one:

144.122.144.11 beluga.cc.metu.edu.tr or
144.122.144.11 beluga

These changes may require the system to restart.

For Linux operating systems:

The users should apply the same settings mentioned above. "hosts" file is under /etc directory on Linux operating systems.

(*) The IP change affects the following software:

Ansys (Linux/Windows)
MSC. SuperForm (Windows)
MSC. MARC/MSC. Mentat (Windows)
MSC. Patran (Windows)
MSC. SuperForge (Windows)
Mathematica (Linux/Windows)
Matlab (Linux/Windows)

Important Note 3: Disk space is reserved for licensed software applications on central servers using large data files (like /temp directory on Beluga server). These directories fill up quickly because users have no limit on using these spaces. In case users do not delete their unused or old files, available disk space being wasted, other users cannot use these directories.

Files under directories of unlimited use like these are deleted periodically by Computer Center. For this reason, please keep your files in safer areas (like home directory or desktop computer).

Any breach or violation of the provisions in the license aggreements of the software is strictly prohibited by the "Law of Intellectual Property Rights (law item 5846)" and by "Turkish Law of Penalty (law item 525/a)".
